Configuration error of Gmail in Thunderbird

Are you getting this error when you try to set-up Gmail to Thunderbird?
"Username or password invalid"
"Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?"

First, you have to make sure that your Username and Password is correct. Try typing them in notepad and copy-paste to gmail.com. (Just to be sure).
Second, make sure that your "Forwarding" settings is configured correctly. Login to your gmail account then refer to this link: https://support.google.com/mail/troubleshooter/1668960?rd=1#ts=1665018,1665141,2769074

If these fail, it means either of the following:

1. Your anti-virus might be blocking sending and receiving such information.
This happens especially with Eset NOD anti-virus. Try disabling it first then configure your mail again.

2. Your mail settings do not allow access to Thunderbird (without you knowing it).
Yes, Google has updated their "security settings" that will block applications/devices from accessing you e-mail. You might even get the following message in your account/recovery account:
Hi Name,
We recently blocked a sign-in attempt to your Google Account [email@gmail.com].

To fix this, follow these steps:
1. Login to your gmail account on the web.
2. Go to https://security.google.com/settings/security/activity.
The page will be displayed like this:

Click on the Settings in the Account permissions area corresponding "Access for less secure apps". It should be Enabled.

3. Enable access and click Done button.

4. Kavoooom!
You can now set your gmail in Thunderbird. You now also allowed other apps (who knows what and where are they) to access you email. Gmail did not even care to provide management for this. (sad).
